Well oaked. You pick up on the charry smoke and vanilla right away. But then the fruit hits, all ripe figs and sweet green grasses and lemons and limes and even hints of pineapple. With the fresh acidity, it all combines to a big, lush wine, with a clean, food-friendly scour.

An enormous, complex, brooding and extraordinary Pinot Noir, a blend of Bien Nacido and Gainey’s Santa Rosa Hills vineyards. Opens with a blast of peppery, cherry fruit, with tobacco and minty overtones. The rich berry flavors in a creamy texture, with sweet oak tannins, feel ripe, plush and terrific in the mouth. Editors’ Choice.

From a winery that stars every year in this variety, a dry, stylish wine, perfect for cocktails or with food. Shows citrus, fig and oak flavors, with a fat nutty quality from Semillon. Finishes with a hint of honey.

A Châteauneuf-type blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Viognier. Has a lively, fresh nose of fruit purée, with chocolate, ginger, vanilla and smoke. Tastes complex; no particular fruit stands out, but it’s fruity and earthy, with herbal and oaky notes. Pretty wine.

Lush nose of apple fruit, butterscotch and toast. Rich and ripe fruit with flavors bordering on candy-apple or butterscotch sweet. Long toasty finish with spices and caramel. Very lovable, in a very forward style.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tasted in September, 2007, this Chard was a bit disjointed, showing an awkward displacement of fruit, acidity, lees and oak. But the component parts are fine, with rich pineapple brûlée, Key lime pie, butterscotch, yeast and Asian spice flavors. Give it until early 2009 to knit together, and should improve for a couple years.

This bottling from veteran Gainey is one of the most dependable in California. The ’07 doesn’t disappoint, bringing back memories of the fabulous ’04 and ’05. Like them, it’s dry, rich and crisp in acidity, with a sourdough yeastiness, like Champagne, that heightens and brightens the lemon, lime, fig and spice flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Most of the grapes come from this cool-climate growing area, giving the wine a peppery aroma and flavor. The winemaker included 15% Syrah from the warmer home ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley. A good choice, as that adds a fat, soft richness. Finishes fully dry, firm in acidity and finely tannic, with ripe flavors of blackberries. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The grapes actually are from an estate vineyard in the warmer eastern Santa Rita Hills, with 12% from Santa Ynez Valley, which makes it more or less a blend of warm and cool climates. This pretty Syrah shows a varietal purity and structural integrity that make it great. Smooth and long in the finish, it’s a tour de force of black currants, licorice, cola, cedar, carob and smoky leather. Best now through 2010.

Pleasant and crisp, this easy-drinking wine has apple and peach flavors and just a tad of sugar. Its ripe, pretty flavors will go well with fresh fruits or grilled fish.
