Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Well-made and expressive of its variety, this wine brims with black currant and olive aromas and flavors, and the smoky oak is nicely integrated. It’s dry, with dusty, creamy tannins and a good bite of acid. As good as many more expensive wines, but Gallo’s economies of scale keep the price modest.

This affordable wine is Exhibit A on why Pinot Gris/Grigio is such a hot variety. It’s like a cross between Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, brisk and clean on the one hand, and rich and fruity on the other.

Rich and concentrated, with black olives and blackberry fruit; the mouthfeel is ripe and lush, leading to a long, layered finish. A very good wine made even more attractive by the price. Best Buy.

Lovely aromas, flavors and a fine mouthfeel define this rare item—a real Pinot Noir value. Appealing black cherry, earth, and tarragon aromas and flavors keep the taster interested, suggesting a broad range of food pairings, from salmon to lamb. It even offers decent body and length, almost unheard of in this price range.

The bigger the ship the slower it turns, they say. Nevertheless, the new generation at Gallo has done wonders in a short time with both wine and image. Another winner here, with a rich core of juicy Russian River fruit framed nicely by tasty oak. Solid, persistent fruit flavors continue through the lengthy finish.

Yup, this is a 2000, and it’s still fresh and zippy in acidity. It’s not a big wine, but a complex, subtle one, with a firm minerality undergirding pineapple and oak flavors. It should hold and improve through this decade, and will be instructive for those who don’t know what a good, old Chard can do.

Full-bodied but not terribly lush or tannic, with readily approachable flavors of blackberries and vanilla leading the way. Turns a bit chocolaty on the soft finish. Well made and nicely balanced.

What a finewine this is. The plummy, cherry flavors are layered with an edge of sage and other dried herbs, and the tannins are rich but easy. There’s real elegance and finesse here.

Opens with an odd chemical-resin-plastic note, which pops up again on the back end. In the mouth, black plum, oak and chalk flavors glide through to the finish. —D.M.

The really ripe dark cherry, toasty oak and licorice aromas and flavors here are winning. It has a wonderful sweetness and balance. The fruit here is rounder and more forward than in the Barelli—still, it’s big, juicy and has plenty of structure.
