Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Young and jumpy at first, with early lactic notes. Airing allows this wine to show ripe berry aromas and flavors with ample shadings of oak-based vanilla and chocolate. Saturated and full; this wine gets it right. Drink through 2008.

Beefy stuff for a young wine with only four months of oak aging. Still, there’s bacon and generous black-fruit aromas followed by black cherry, plum, tobacco and pepper flavors. It’s full, round and mouthfilling, with chocolate, coffee and a hint of herbs on the finish. Nice and complete. A no-complaints type of Tempranillo.

Sometimes less is more, and with Figuero’s wines the shorter the time spent in oak the more amplified the fruit. This crianza, like its sibling from 2005, is textured and totally sound. The nose is plump and intensely fruity, while the palate has a fine but racy feel and flavors of blackberry, plum, chocolate and cola. Long and layered on the finish, and pure. Drink now through 2011.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One sniff announces a wood pile’s worth of toasty, dusty oak. But there’s all the bold Tempranillo fruit and classic RDD terroir here to absorb it. Ripe as can be on the palate, with equal parts mulled black fruit, spice and mocha. It finishes smooth, with generous extract but nothing grating or grabby. Drink now through 2012.

Heavenly blackberry and fudge brownie aromas give this a bouquet that generates a wink and a smile. The mouth is succulent and graced by flavors of black plum, tea, nutmeg and leather. It’s big and robust, but balanced as can be. And even though it spent 21 months in oak, the wood is integrated and shows itself as chocolate and mocha on the smooth, long-fading finish. Drink now through 2013.

Plenty ripe, in fact it’s on the edge of raisiny but not quite over the line. The palate runs surprisingly racy with a lot of acidity, yet the flavor profile is short and drying. Shows a flash or two but it’s not a complete wine and not worth the high price tag.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A big, dark wine with bacon, blackberry, stewed black cherry and dark spice aromas. The palate is pure, lush and fun, while the flavors are full and dark, emphasizing licorice, blackberry, chocolate, fig and coffee. Delicious and easygoing in that modern RDD style. Drink now through 2014.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sort of sweet and jammy, but nice overall. The nose is your average young, candied easiness, while the plump berry and plum flavors are pretty much where they should be. Shows juiciness and a spunky mouthfeel, as it was aged only four months in oak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The year 2007 is not going to go down in the books as a good one for Ribera del Duero. Many of the young wines, like this one, are showing narrow, sour fruit and too much funk and pickle. Here, there’s a touch of jamminess and red fruit but mostly it’s another thin, pushy wine with anemic flavors and a rough mouthfeel. Stick with the 2006 if you can find it.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Figuero’s top wine is more than fine. The nose begins with meaty, leathery notes and backs them up with spice and ripe fruit. The palate is not flabby or fat; instead it’s racy and features good acidity that pushes raspberry, tea, tobacco and nutmeg flavors. A more agile wine than many from this famed region. Should age well for five to ten years.
