Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This is a powerful Rhone-style wine made with 67% syrah, 20% Grenache, 8% mouvedre, and 5% viognier; deeply aromatic, with smoked meats and bacon fat aromas at the front of the nose, but deep layers of aromas below that of smoke, earth, truffles, and leather, dense and opaque on the olefactory senses; very sweet, soft rich and mellow on first taste, but then the big muscle of this wine emerges; chocolate and black spices, pepper and meat flavors emerge, edged with big tannins and fresh acidity; this wine is too young at this time to really show itself, but it is huge; if there is a fault that it appears to be too sweet at this stage, which gives it a clumsy feel in the mouth; perhaps that will balance out better with time, as it certainly has the body to sustain a lot of growth; rare and hard to get but a real mouthful. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Huge nose, very sweet and aromatic and loaded with over-the-top oak aromas, spicy and vanilla scented with hints of oleander and magnolia; dense and sweet in the mouth, this wine is a monster of oak and sugar; perfumed and floral on the palate, like chewing magnolia blossoms; round and thick with a high glycerol content, it coats the mouth, even when you don’t want it to; long cloying finish; those who appreciate these chardonnays on steroids will like this wine; it’s not for me, particularly since I had it after a Lafon Batard.
