Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Gemtree style is one of user-friendly wines with immediate appeal. Tadpole, the entry-level Shiraz, features slightly jammy blackberry fruit, a whack of vanilla and ample volume wrapped in extremely soft tannins. A tart edge on the finish provides balance.

Modest toasty, nutty nuances add complexity to the pretty lemon and lime fruit aromas, then provide a backdrop of warm richness on the palate. Finishes with a touch of warmth, but this is a nice mouthful of Chardonnay for the price.

Fresh, lively, different—but not for everyone. We found peach on the nose, plus a distinct sweet-pea or fresh-vegetable aroma. The same characteristics recur on the palate: peach, with a fresh garden greenness. You’ll either love it or hate it; this score reflects a panel divided in the same way.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Chardonnay only gets three months in French oak, and it's no suprise—it's a fresh, clean rendition of the variety, with dust and melon flavors on the palate. Finishes fresh and minerally.

Roughly three quarters Cab Sauvignon and one quarter Petit Verdot, with a smidge of Merlot for good measure. Plums, cherries and spices on the nose hint at what's under inside the palate's thick, tannic shell. Finishes with smooth tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very good wine; though the fruit is the same as in the Uncut, this wine spends 10 months more in oak—all new French oak. And it shows. The nose is dusted with dry spices, and the palate has considerable wood-derived bells and whistles hiding the plum fruit underneath. Hold for five years, and dive in.

Petit Verdot is a character actor who’s never really grabbed the spotlight for itself, but makes an interesting appearance now and again. This McLaren Vale example is oaky but backed by ample plum and cassis fruit and framed by tannins that seem soft for the variety. Cedar and spice come through on the finish. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is an intriguing wine that the winery made “naturally,” with indigenous yeasts, no additions and no filtration. It’s slightly musky and nutty at the same time, with a slightly creamy note to the pineapple-like fruit. It’s medium-bodied, at 12.5% abv, round in the mouth, yet crisp and slightly chalky on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Named for the practice of aging the Shiraz on Chardonnay lees, Gemtree’s 2007 White Lees features plenty of plummy fruit and vanilla oak, with enough savoriness to keep it in check. It’s a full-bodied effort with soft tannins and a slightly warming finish. Drink now.

“Cadenzia” is a name McLaren Vale winemakers have earmarked for Grenache-based blends. This one is 60% Grenache, which gives a soft, round, cuddly feel to the wine. The balance of the blend is equally split between Tempranillo and Shiraz, resulting in aromas of cherries laced with cinnamon, dusty earth and mocha. Drink now.
