Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The perfumes of wood mingle with sweet Malbec berry fruit aromas. The wine is in a style that initially emphasizes the fresh, juicy fruit. Then it moves in on the tannins to give a densely dry wine, finishing with a tight, mineral edge.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An intensely black-colored wine, with dark, smoky tannins to match. It does have a juicy, ripe sweet berry fruit element, laying under the surface tannins. With this power, it needs several years to develop.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a vineyard at one of the highest points in the Cahors vineyard (nearly 1,000 feet), this is a smoothly perfumed, wood-aged wine that shows light elegance, acidity as well as dark currant fruits and a touch of mint.

Finely balanced, with acidity and tannins firmly bedded in elegant, black currant fruits. The tannins very dry, though they do not dominate. This is a stylish wine for medium-term aging.

One of a pair of comparative wines labeled Antisto. The other comes from Mendoza in Argentina. The Cahors version is lightly mineral, a soft wine feeling a little light in character. It does have the firm tannins and acidity of Cahors Malbec.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Power is the best word to describe this solidly structured wine. Its tannins are dominant at this stage, giving a dense, dry core to the rich black fruits and bitter chocolate. The final adds on appealing black currant perfumes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the top wine from Château Haute-Serre, a powerful expression of Malbec, very dense and solid, but certainly not overpowering. It has ripe fruit that is held in check by brooding tannins and a firm structure, giving it weight but also surprising restraint. Age for 4–5 years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The curious name refers to the density of the vines per hectare (2,700 per acre), giving the vines stress and therefore smaller yields per plant. The result is a tough, concentrated wine, powered by tannins, new wood and very structured fruit. Give it 10 years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a vineyard managed by the Vigouroux family, Leret Monpezat’s wine is big, dry, its massive dark fruit a powerful underlay for a series of tannins. The wine’s depth is immense, powerful, a great concentration of licorice and blackberry flavors. Age for 3–4 years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The home vineyard of the Vigouroux family has produced an elegant wine, its fruit finely in keeping with freshness as well as solid, dry classic Malbec tannins. The wine’s fruit is just an element in this well-balanced wine.
