This compact and lean Barolo Riserva opens with a light but luminous ruby color with amber highlights. The aromas here are elegant and ethereal with loads of menthol, balsam and root beer-like overtones. In the mouth, this is a particularly polished and silky wine.

Barolo Arione is a mature expression of Barolo with strawberry and blackberry preserves backed by volatile aromas of green apple and old spice. The wine feels rich and thick in the mouth with a thick, chewy finish.

There are two sides to Barolo Arione. On the one side is the wine’s dark color, thick concentration and vibrant cherry aromas. On the other side is the mouthfeel that is thin, compact and extremely focused. The sharp, defined nature of this wine gives it enormous food pairing potential.

Deeply earthy on the nose, with tobacco and dried fruits mixing with saddle leather, tar and hints of citrus. Richly tannic, this wine deserves all the time you can give it; try in 2010 or beyond.

Pretty hefty and funky aromas of leather, dark plums, charcoal and animal. Sour-cherry fruit and hints of licorice brought home by bright acidity. A Dolcetto that dances on its toes—this is a lively, mouth-grabbing wine.

More barnyard and earth than sweet fruit on the nose, which will turn off some and invite others. The mouthfeel is nice; the flavors are full and expansive, if still not particularly fruity. The finish is complex and lengthy. An intriguing wine. Best Buy.
