This 100% Merlot from the Entre-deux-Mers, made in the style of a grand cru, is rich, spicy and full of superripe blackberry flavors. From low yielding, high density vines, it is big and concentrated, with hints of wood under the weight of the fruit.

90-92 Barrel sample. A big, rich wine, with lively fresh citric balance, enrobed in swathes of ripe apricots, and a touch of wood spice.

Made in a traditional, gravity-operated cellar with 100% Merlot from a densely planted vineyard, this is an impressive wine that manages to tread a fine line between considerable richness and a more restrained, dry tannin and fresh fruit character. Although it does quickly fall apart with decanting or air, it is worth aging, for at least 3–4 years.

The Despagne family returned to tradition with the making of Girolate, planting a vineyard to the former high density, keeping winemaking simple. This is the 2004, the latest release. Reflecting the heat of that vintage, it is soft, textured, rich and spicy, with a southern warmth, pure superripe Merlot.
