Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
You’ll want to age this wine for a good 6–8 years, because right now it’s rather tough in tannins, and the fruit and oak have not married. Nonetheless it’s quite a good wine. Shows complex layers of blackberries, currants and caramelized oak. Lifts Alexander Valley Cabernet above its usual level into noteworthy.

Purity is the word that comes to mind with this single-vineyard Cab. There’s a translucence to the cherry and black currant fruit, and the way the complex tannins glide over the palate. The wine finishes dry. Drink now through 2010.

A tremendous Cabernet, pure and refined, and undoubtedly the beneficiary of its great vintage. It’s dry and elegant, with the slightly herbal tinge and soft tannins that Alexander Valley invariably lends. Yet the flavor profile is dominated by delicious, oak-inspired blackberries, cherries and currants. Brilliant and beautiful, and should develop for many years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark, oaky, very dry and tannic in youth, this well-structured Cab needs time. Those tannins sting and shut down the middle palate, but the bright blackberry and cherry fruit shines through. Should hold and improve for five years in a cool cellar.

From Cabernet maestro Nick Goldschmidt, this Merlot-Cabernet Franc blend is eminently drinkable now. It’s soft and dry, with gentle tannins framing jammy raspberry and cherry flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This tough vintage presented the difficulty of achieving ripeness with balance. This wine struggles, but does pretty well. It’s a wine to drink now, with its edge of blackcurrant, enhanced with oak, that fades fairly quickly.

Cabernet collectors who look beyond Napa Valley should be aware of this wine. It’s an important addition to the Alexander Valley pantheon, a densely layered young wine. Shows brilliant red stone fruit, cassis, cola, date nut bread, mocha and tangerine zest flavors gorgeously lavished with the vanilla and smoky caramel of oak. Just delicious now, and should slowly spread its wings for many years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a densely structured young Cab. Although the tannins are ripe and sweet, they still possess enough astringency to suggest cellaring. This wine is terrifically rich in black currants and exotic, smoky oak—a big, rich Cab whose impeccable structure defines Oakville. Unfined and unfiltered, it will be best after 2008 and through 2017.

You’ll want to cellar this, although I won’t guarantee results because the combination of hard tannins and superripe fruit is unusual. Those lockdown tannins limit pleasure now, while the fruit stretches from blackberries all the way to raisins. Yet the wine is dry and complex, and could surprise.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Goldschmidt released their 2004 Vyborny Cab nearly 2 years ago, and it was terrific. This PLUS bottling has not been explained by the winery, but seems to be a reserve-style selection of the wine, and a lot oakier. The wine is extremely ripe in blackberries and cherries, while the oak adds sweeter vanilla and caramel flavors that do not really add to the original release.
