A little grapy and heavy, but overall this purple-colored Syrah is good. The bouquet is sweet with plum and prune, and the palate, while a little tangy and young, has vibrant if generic plum and berry flavors. Best if youthful, fruity New World reds are your thing.

Ripe and pure with blackberry and olive aromas, and the flavors of black fruits mixed with some meatiness and cola are true and tasty. The feel is a touch racy and acidic, but that’s working to keep this balanced.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A creamy, ripe, almost syrupy wine with a jammy essence and some mint to the nose. Dark as night in color, rich in berry and cassis flavors, and finishes with a dose of prune. Smooth and deep Cabernet Sauvignon with 23% Syrah and 7% Cab Franc. Shows all the trimmings: coconut, chocolate and depth. Drink now through 2011.

Quite big and dark, but also narrow in scope and somewhat flat on the palate. This wine delivers size but not much edge. It’s balance is in question as it comes on bold, sweet and giant, but not terribly elegant. Has its moments but also some holes in the fabric.

One of the more perfumed Chilean red wines you’re likely to encounter. The Viognier and Grenache bring a floral, bouncy element, while the Syrah contributes smoky accents, chocolate and power. An interesting Rhône-style blend with its own alluring character.

Pungent and sweaty smelling, with austere aromas of sour apple and grapefruit. Not very Chardonnay-like with its flavors of biting orange peel, citrus and green apple. Finishes bland and almost sour. Cold in personality.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Generic in every way, but commendable for its freshness, green-fruit aromas and body. This wine offers nothing more than mid-level fruit flavors, but it’s flush and nice enough on the palate. Some bitterness to the finish re-emphasizes its basic quality.

A different breed of cat. Made from organic fruit, Lenga shows spearmint, wet clay and a light leafiness along with elegant, unforced red-fruit aromas. The palate drips rather than oozes with red cherry and plum, while the finish is light, dusty and elegant. A more reserved, intellectual wine than most bottlings that run $15.

Surprise! This is a legitimate, true to the variety Pinot Noir from southerly Bío Bío Valley. The wine has dryness and balance, a little wood, and pure aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry ice tea and chocolate. It’s lively and streamlined on the palate, so it will work with food. A definite winner in an emerging category that is Chilean Pinot.

A stocky, meaty style of Carmenère, with earthy aromas and then sweet, choppy flavors of cherry, plums and herbs. Turns more herbal on the back side, with carob and briar on the long, fairly consistent finish. Middle-of-the-road wine that stands up to scrutiny.
