Off-putting nose, dishwater and septic aromas, musty, better after a time showing some sweet old fruit aromas, earthen tones; much better in the mouth with sweetness and ripe fruit; this has real “old-vine” character; softened acidity and pretty good balance; the finish begins to deteriorate, though, as dry, crackly tannins take over the wine and suppress the early flavors; probably a damaged bottle given the nose; still showing its class though. These wines, when fully mature like this one, are among the best from Burgundy, and this was no exception; deep rich nose of black cherries and mixed black fruits, some earth, spices, smoke; very polished and expressive with forward but layered black cherry flavors sustained by a mix of sour red cherries and citrus highlights; powerful but elegant wine; long finish, smooth and silky but with great focus; as these wines age, I have found that the differences between the Grands Échezeaux and its pricier cousins of Richebourg and La Tache get smaller. (19/20) Another bottle from a different source tasted later was pretty much the same; this one somewhat sweeter with more caramel flavors adding to the black cherry flavors; same wonderful depth and length at the finish.

Opens in the classic Leroy style, exuding sweetness and floral flourishes of ripe fruit, exotic aromas but as is often the case, tends to be over the top; as expected, a very sweet wine loaded with ripe cherries and plums, almost tropical in its sweetness; but at the same time the wine has real character, showing nice earth tones and a rich smokiness that makes the wine all the more exotic; perhaps gives up some acidity in the process, but at the same time the finish is long and well defined; this is very good, particularly for those who favor the Leroy style. (19/20) Another bottle from Rob Deutsch at the Finkel/Elvin dinner did not show as well, showing the same nose, but falling down on the palate with uneven balance, too much alcohol, and a bit hot.

Although much criticized by many as a vintage that is austere and dry, the better wines at this stage of their evolution can be ripe and rich with plenty of sex appeal; this is one of those opening with a deep and rich nose, lots of black cherry aromas, spices, earth, wood, and deep enticing scents; ripe and rich in the mouth; this is intense wine with a deep and complex set of flavors that range from black cherries on the one hand to red cherries with citrus highlights on the other hand; spicy with a light cacao flavor in the mid-mouth, the wine has a long finish that brings a fullness to the palate that is most rewarding; there is a core of earthy tannins that is consistent with the vintage, but it is contained and balanced. Spicy nose but quite restrained, still complex aromas that range from gamey to tobacco leaf, smoky, but also with rich fruit aromas that begin to emerge after a time, black cherry and brambleberry scents; sweet and ripe in the mouth with great depth of flavor; this wine is no slouch despite mixed reports on this vintage; lots of presence in this wine; big dry tannins are lurking in the wings, but I believe there is enough fruit at the core to sustain a balance for the long haul; spicy and peppery at the end with a rich sweet core. This wine has the reputation of a winner, and this bottle bore out the prediction; huge powerful nose loaded with sweetness and intensity, concentrated oriental spice aromas, deep and rich with powerful aromas across a broad spectrum that swings from steel and minerals to ripe black cherry and perfumed floral scents, but in any case the nose knocks your socks off; same in the mouth, huge and powerful flavors; intense, deep and rich; layers of fruit, and the stems are definitely there; cranberry, crabapple, touch of fresh wood; so balanced, elegant, and yet powerful. (19.5/20)
