Fails to inspire, with lean, herbal fruit and huge, monster tannins. The mouthfeel is simple and rustic. A hot, peppery note shows up in the finish.

Dark, thick and young, with sour cherry Lifesaver flavors and noticeable dusty tannins. It’s actually a very pretty wine, very dry and balanced, with good length and a clean finish. Will age, but drinks well now. —S.H.

Distinctly Zinny, with peppery, dark berry flavors and a brambly character that veers into raisins and cassis. Nearly 15% alcohol makes the wine hot and heady, although there’s no residual sugar. This country-style Zin is overpriced.

Shows why Syrah can be such a good full-bodied red. Fleshy flavors of blackberries and cherries combine with an olive streak and soft tannins. Feels rich in the mouth, with a satisfying finish. —S.H.

Country style, with its rough, earthy tannins and brambly berry flavors. Yet it’s clean and likeable, with intensely jammy, berry and stone fruit flavors. It also has a nice, round, supple texture. A versatile wine with lots going for it.

There’s a tutti fruiti element here that distracts a bit from the otherwise fine cherry, berry, raspberry and spice flavors. Tannins are also a bit tough.
