Bramble bush, graphite, leather and medium-depth fruit are the opening notes on this qualm-free, fairly muscular Rioja. Dark cherry and raspberry flavors run the palate, and they are followed by a warm, milk chocolate-tinged finish. Very nice for a 2002.

Aromas of tobacco, earth and plenty of fresh-cut oak make for a big, boisterous nose. The mouth is opulent and fairly well loaded with cassis and cherry. The finish is wall-to-wall as far as tannins go, while overall it’s a stacked wine with class and power. Best for fans of well-oaked, sweet reds.

Flowery, with a nice mix of sweetness, dried apricots and vanilla. Flavors of banana, papaya and apple dominate a textured, modestly rich palate. Remelluri blends about a half-dozen grapes together for its white Rioja, and the result is smooth, albeit not overly powerful.

Smooth berries and plenty of dark licorice carry the seductive bouquet. And seeing that this is Remelluri’s signature high-priced red, you should expect the fine berry, plum and chocolate flavors that rest comfortably on the palate. But like many ’02s, the wine has a hard mouthfeel and pronounced acidity, so it doesn’t quite trigger all the pleasure points that it might in a better vintage.

This multi-grape white blend is aged in a fair amount of new and once-used oak, and it has the aromas and mouthfeel of a good Burgundy or California Chardonnay. With 14.5% alcohol, it’s quite New World in its delivery of apricot and peach flavors, riding on powerful vanilla and toast notes. Excellent but oaky; somewhere a beaver is smiling.
