Pretty tight and closed down in its youth, this mountain Pinot shows tannins unusual in California versions of the variety. Totally dry, it has a deep core of blackberries, currants, wild berries and chocolate. Will probably develop, but it’s a bit too full-bodied for a Pinot Noir.

So ripe, it smells and tastes almost Porty. But stays dry and balanced, with a blast of black currant, beef jerky, cocoa and pepper flavors that are wrapped into firm tannins. A fine example of a big, lusty Sonoma Zinfandel.

Bottled at 18% residual sugar, this wine’s most delicious quality is its fabulously rich sweetness, almost decadent in pale honey and apricot jam. Acidity is just fine, but what the wine needs is greater depth of fruity flavor.

This is a big, ripe, distinctly New World Merlot that shows off its terroir to perfection. A long, sunny growing season has given explosive currant, blackberry jam and mocha flavors, while cool nights have preserved vital acidity and firm tannins. Drink now, with grilled steak topped with a blue cheese and brown butter sauce.

A lovely wine whose most memorable and distinctive attributes are its dryness and high acidity, not to mention relatively low alcohol. These make it extremely food-friendly, and the citrus, wildflower and vanilla flavors will pair nicely with everything from pâté to a pear, and bitter green salad to pizza.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Straddles the border between dry and off-dry, with 1.9% residual sugar, but the extraordinarily high acidity balances the honeyed lime, spicy apple pie and wildflower flavors and makes the finish functionally dry. Great as an apéritif sipper, and a honey-glazed ham will be a perfect partner.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Greenwood Ridge often does a good job at Sauvignon Blanc, but not this year. The wine is irritating in unripe feline flavors and it’s also off-dry, with 1.9% residual sugar.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Almost fleshy textured, the wine is broad on the palate yet offers good acidity for balance. Grapefruit, lemon, melon, pineapple, apple and herb flavors are blended nicely here in a fine-tuned, elegant style. Fruit driven, but not overly sweet.

Reminiscent of the old Martini Cabs from Napa Valley. Just oozes the juiciest, sweetest cassis, and drinks velvety-soft even in youth, with beautifully dry, dusty tannins. Not quite up to par with Napa’s best in terms of depth and complexity, but getting close. —S.H.
