Pale in color but with decent flavor and body, there a lot to like in this Oz sparkler with a famous name. It offers toast and vanilla aromas, flavors of melon, dried fruit and earth, and a fine even bead. There's good length to the dry citrus-tinged finish.

The lime, pear and melon aromas and flavors are garnished with just a touch of vanilla. Picks up some vegetal lima bean notes on the palate, and the acids stick out a bit on the finish. Still, it’s crisp and clean—and would go down easy after a hot round of golf.

An 80-20 blend, this medium-bodied, supple wine is made for mass appeal. The creamy texture and chocolaty overtones are almost guaranteed to please, with enough dried cherry and cassis fruit to stand up to charred steaks. The barest hint of dried herbs adds a welcome touch of complexity. Drink now–2010.

Next time you drop a six-stroke lead on the last day of the country club tournament, head for the dining room and order a bottle of this mainstream Shiraz. It goes down easy, thanks to its roundness and supple tannins, yet still offers enough complexity and tannin to stand up to simply grilled steaks.

An okay vintage of a typically better wine. The wine is dominated by a nutty, amaretto or liqueurish note, with tangy oak on the finish. There’s firm plum fruit and a piquant sweet-tartness that grabs on midpalate, though, that’s quite nice. Imported by Foster’s Wine Estates Americas.

This is a good wine but one whose odd elements (soy-sauce and baked beans notes on the nose, and a little greenness on the palate) distract from its more pleasing attributes (smooth, dry tannins, hints of tea flavors). Just doesn't come together well enough to merit the higher scores that this producer routinely garners.

A perennial favorite in the Australian sparklers arena, this wine balances pretty bread-flour and golden apple aromas and flavors with a crisp citrus cleanness. Blessedly dry on the palate; citrus, pear and biscuit flavors bring it to a clean close.

This Shiraz has medium body and chalky-chewy tannins. A dried spice, or clove, note that shows on the nose comes around again to accent the palate’s bright, juicy plum fruit; brown sugar and caramel components are almost too hedonistic and rich, but toe the line nicely. The wine comes to a medium-long close, the chewy tannins hanging on after the flavor gives up.

Traditional scents and aromas of hay and citrus blend with unexpected ones like durum flour, mango and apricot. Frothy on the palate, with brisk acidity and a slightly chalky medium-length finish. Overall, an even package that will age well.

A solid wine with presence, not too big or overblown. The nose isn’t all that expressive—we found subtle nut and chalk notes—but the palate offers up plenty of sturdy pear fruit, with shakes of nutmeg and chalk. Lingers on the close, with more nut flavors.
