Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Like some of the other 2008s, this wine seems to be evolving rapidly—a common enough occurence in hot vintages. Apple and citrus flavors still dominate, but the wine is already showing hints of honey and toast. Drink it now and over the next 3–5 years.

Toasty, mealy aromas combine with peach and smoke in a beguiling, complex nose that resembles a fine Chassagne-Montrachet. Flavors of peach and citrus coat the palate without ever seeming overly rich, heavy or oily, extending through the long ripe-citrus finish.

Has beautiful yellow stone fruit aromas and flavors. The mouthfeel is fairly full, but a thread of citrus fruit keeps it zesty and nimble on the tongue.

Aromas are super, like vanilla bean and fresh cream. The palate strikes a great balance of cream and clean, crisp citrus and stone fruit. The finish is long and zesty, and tastes of lime. Excellent overall. With only 90 cases imported to the U.S., you’re more likely to find it on a restaurant list than on your retailer’s shelf.

Winemaker Jeffrey Grosset advises that you open this Bordeaux blend an hour before you drink it, and I am inclined to agree. Even after a couple of minutes in the glass, the nose won’t show more than traces of clay and bread dough. On the palate, the wine is just as hard to read, but the overall impression—great mouthfeel, smooth tannins, and tightly wound red fruit—means only good things for future enjoyment. Drink 2005+.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a very enjoyable Riesling, and always one of Australia’s best. This vintage, yellow stone fruit aromas come on strong, followed up by pear and citrus zest flavors. It is tangy and dry overall, with a very steely, very rigid spine. The first sip feels almost too rigid, but it grows on you. Imported by USA Wine West.

Penetrating aromas of apple blossom, peach and tarragon burst from the glass. The flavors are even more intense: Granny Smith apples, with softer, warmer, stone-fruit undercurrents. The finish boasts searingly tart flavors that last and last. Should age gloriously.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though better known for his Rieslings, Jeffrey Grosset also makes a mean Chardonnay, which is all the more special for a dinner date because it’s not that easy to come by. If your evening is alfresco, you may mistake the wine’s light aromas of fresh-cut grass and hay for the scents of your outdoor surroundings. On the palate, pear and lemon zest aromas are couched in a judiciously creamy pillow. As should be true of any romantic partner, this wine’s best feature is its texture. In this case, it feels like a soft cloud of cotton and chalk dust, and lasts long.

In blind tastings of young wines such as we do for these reviews, the ultimate heights certain wines may achieve can be hard to discern. Such is the case for Grosset’s Polish Hill Riesling, a wine that impresses for its power and clarity at this age, but clearly has much more to give. Floral and mineral notes open, followed by strident apple and lime flavors. It’s zingy, bold and intense—impressive now, but try to give it at least five years to see how badly this rating underestimates its apogee.

Not an overtly flavorful wine, the Watervale is wiry, with citrus and peach-skin flavors and not any fluff. Its mineral-chalk texture, which continues on through the finish, is what’s most pleasing. Clean, crisp and correct.
