This is a Cab that wouldn’t stand out in a competitive blind tasting, because it’s not a bruiser. Instead, it can claim balance, finesse, elegance and harmony. Everything’s understated. But aficionados will savor the beautiful fruit and classic structure.

An elegant wine with lean yet fairly intense fruit in the black-cherry/ plum range. Past the opening fruit there are touches of chocolate and dashes of spice. Because of its harmony and balance, the wine is drinking quite well now, but should be even better with five to eight years of bottle age.

Hard to appreciate, with its bite of acidity and jammy flavors. Good and dry, but this Cabernet lacks the richness and complexity you expect from Oakville.

Very dry and somewhat lean, with citrus, mineral and peach flavors. Oak adds a rich coating of buttered toast and smoky caramel. An elegant wine that’s at its best now.

This is quite a delicious Sauvignon, notable for its balance and elegance. Everything is understated, like fine tailoring. The flavors are food-friendly citrus zest, lemondrop, figs, melons and spicy green apples, and the finish totally dry.

A bit too ripe, with the cassis fruit tinged with raisins, and overly soft, this Cab finishes with some tannic astringency. Doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere, so drink now.

Groth’s Cab has not performed spectacularly in recent years, and the ’05 does not show improvement. The wine is very ripe, almost syrupy in blackberry, currant and cherry flavors, with a simple structure. It doesn’t really make you want to take repeated sips. It’s a proper wine, but not an exciting one.

Lots to like in this dry, crisp, fruity young Sauvignon Blanc. It offers a sunburst of lemon, lime, and green grass flavors, with a touch of wild gooseberry and vanilla. Feels sleek and clean in the mouth.

Tighter and earthier than many ‘01 Napa Cabs, and not offering as much decadent enjoyment, although its still a pretty good wine. Full-bodied and oaky, with a touch of raisins.

This wine offers balanced and focused fruit from the opening right through to the long, velvety smooth finish. The tannic structure is firm but not aggressive. The wine is drinking beautifully now but should be even better with five to eight years of bottle age.
