Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine starts with a minerally nose laced with blueberry and tobacco spice, and leads into bright berry fruit flavors, backed by good acidity and spicy character that gives it depth. Though cheerful, the wine has a spin of brooding complexity.

Cinnamon, pepper and black cherry aromas start this ageable blend of Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet. Flavors of plum, clove, pepper and tobacco are intricate and need to time to soften in the bottle. Overall, assertive and offering a minerally lift that gives it food pairing appeal.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Owned by the same team that makes the Ernie Els wines, the Guardian Peak winery concentrates mainly on Rhône grapes. But it also produces this Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a ripely smooth wine, packed with dusty tannins and a ripe, jammy, densely fruity character that is very Australian in style.

The SMG is a big wine with a robust character. A minerally nose with pepper, spice and cinnamon is followed by a powerful combination of berry and leather on the palate. Firm but smooth, the wine will age gracefully.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Powerful spice, cigar, cinnamon and lead pencil join bright raspberry aromas in this assertive Cab from Ernie Els and Jean Engelbrecht. Nutty spice typifies the palate; buttery toast on the finish. A hearty, enjoyable wine that could age comfortably for five more years.

Black currant, red berry, tobacco and spice give this robust wine a masculine edge. Luscious berry combined with savory spice and leather is backed by rich, sturdy tannins and a long, serious finish. Can age, but is excellent to drink now.

This wine has a rich, velvety character that gives it solo sipping appeal. Pepper and mocha on the nose flow into dark fruit and mocha flavors on the palate. Paired with a good structure and long finish, the wine is both elegant and intriguing.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though lightweight and smooth with dry, even tannins, the modest tart red fruit of this blend is overpowered by unrelenting, intense funky earth, game and metallic notes, rendering it out of balance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Cabernet-Shiraz-Merlot blend is another example of how South African winemakers have mastered the art of the blend. A lighter-style red with great structure, bright fruit flavors and a juicy overall character, it is both accessible and adaptable to varied tastes. There’s complexity but the wine has a soft touch. Drink now.
