Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
My favorite of the 2005 releases from Gypsy Dancer, this is a complex wine that seems to be holding back, like a fine race horse at the starting gate. It’s got the concentrated core of cherry fruit, which leads into mixed berries, toast, spice and more. A light earthy streak supports notes of root and soil, and the midpalate is a bit subdued, but the flavors come roaring back at the end, gaining strength and suggesting that this is a wine to cellar for some years.

A very tight, tart and tannic Pinot Noir, almost impossible to open up despite hours of breathing. Acidic and unyielding, the rating is a compromise between what it is currently showing and what it hints at if you probe deeply enough.

Aromatic with soda pop scents of Dr. Pepper, cola and root beer, this is nonetheless a reasonably substantial wine, not a simple fruit bomb. It’s lively and full of interesting flavors that suggest herb, root and spice; the wood remains a background flavor.

From Gary Andrus’s NZ venture, this is a plump, appealing Pinot that boasts scents of smoke and black cherries, followed by flavors of woodsmoke and plum. A bit astringent on the finish, with firm tannins that deserve to be cellared 2–3 years. Imported by Gypsy Dancer Estates.

Spicy, briary scents suggestive of dried fruits. The wine is brambly, with assertive cherry and raspberry flavors, a rich, live-wire mouthfeel, and a spicy, resiny wrap-up.

Mineral dust scents accent ripe cherries in this medium-bodied offering from American Gary Andrus. Smooth and well structured on the midpalate, turning spicy and briary on the finish. Imported by Gypsy Dancer Estates.

Honeysuckle scents and flavors of pear, papaya and cucumber lead into a fresh and delicate wine, with plenty of acid behind the crisp fruit.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A tart, cranberry- and raspberry-flavored wine, this young, high-acid style of Pinot has a charming, Burgundian feeling to it. The snappy red fruits are underscored with citrus, and the balance is disarmingly light, but not simple or dull.

Not much fruit to be found here, just lots of dried herbs and pungent spices. There are barrel flavors of vanilla and cocoa, and a lean, tannic finish.
