Call it country-style, with the minty sharpness and slightly sweet, candied raspberry, cherry and blackberry flavors. The acidity reprises on the finish, accentuating and harshening the tannins.

Raw in texture, with a harsh, citrus acidity, this bone-dry Merlot isn’t fully ripe. The cherry flavors coexist with a minty greenness.

From some of Monterey’s best growing regions comes this light but likable wine. The racy flavors veer toward tropical fruits and citrus, and while it’s a little on the simple side, the wine is clean and spicy. Fairly high acidity gives it a bit of a tingle.

All the parts here are good. The color is rich and dark, the aromas and flavors are rich and ripe, the tannins are velvety and fine, acidity provides a kick of brightness, and the oak is just right. Somehow though it doesn’t come together yet. The palate feels the edges. Time may soften them.

Dark, ripe, intense in fruit, and meltingly soft, this wine is a hallmark of the international style. It’s fantastically rich in cherry and blackberry fruit, with an amazingly long finish. If it had more structural integrity it would be a blockbuster.

Rich and oaky, this Merlot features flavors of blackberries, cherries and chocolate, although it’s fully dry and not too powerful in alcohol. This is a good price for a full-bodied red of this class.

Extremely ripe in cherry, blackberry, currant and cocoa fruit, this wine is excessively soft, and has a baked cherry sweetness on the finish. Yet it’s easy to drink and enjoyable.
