nitially, deep fruity aromas with a strong hint of mint, then turning more pruney and sweet with hints of chocolate, melted sugar, caramel, deeply scented nose with powerful nuanced elements; deep and rich flavors, layers of ripe fruit, black fruit laced with chocolate; powerful tannins; deep and intense in the mouth with a long finish of black currants, tobacco leaf, and coal; a strong expression of the vintage and property with all of the elements of cedar, earth, and ripe fruit reflected in an aged vessel.

Deep and powerful nose, laced with smoke and earthen notes at the outset, then more tobacco and black pepper, loads of black fruit aromas; in the mouth, layers of sweet fruit with an interesting touch of bitter almond flavors; full flavored with lots of red fruits in the mid-mouth; intense but very balanced and fully expressive; as I have felt for years, the ’59 edges the ’61 for me.

The nose is loaded with lots of earth and paraffin, layers of sweet ripe fruit aromas, chocolate, mocha, smoke, and a big shot of cedar; sweet fruit in the mouth, but the earthen character of the terroir that characterizes Haut-Brion is evident here; rich and ripe while it is dry and refined; balanced finish with peppery and spicy notes, finishing with a strong presence of tobacco

This wine has finally come around and now presents a very sweet and ripe nose loaded with cassis, coal tar, chocolate, black pepper, with a hint of rubber that I have noticed in this wine over the years; in the mouth the wine shows lots of black sweet fruits at the outset, but at its core it is still a bit backward with very dry tannins and crusty earthen flavors; though there is depth and balance evident throughout and at the finish; a great wine in the making.
