This Zin is so fresh and jammy in raspberries, cherries and blackberries, you wonder why they didn’t hold it back for a while, to let the flavors meld. Tasted in March 2008, it still had that acid-forward, crushed berry tartness you find in wine straight out of the fermenter. But it’s a very good Zin that will improve in the bottle. This should be at its best by this winter and into 2009.

The age of this wine, nearly 5 years, makes you wonder why Hawley held it back so long. Maybe to let the harshness resolve. If so, it didn’t work. It remains a bitter wine, with overripe, Porty flavors.

The sulfur in my bottle was slow to blow off, and when it did, it revealed a toughly tannic, herbal wine. The tastes range from sage and tobacco to candied Life Saver blackberry and cherry to shriveled currants. Those pesky tannins turn up when you swallow, leaving behind a hard astringency.

Strong wood flavors characterize ths wine, minimizing its elegance and complexity. It’s heavy in toasty oak, with a coating of smoky, charred caramel covering the underlying pear and apple fruit flavors.

Here’s a ripe Chard that detonates the palate with tangerine, pineapple, peach and green apple, and a spicy seasoning of oak. It has a creamy texture and a sweet, fruity intensity that finishes with a scour of orange peel. Delicious.

There’s plenty of ripe fruit in this wine, but it tastes kind of aggressive in oak, with scads of toast and vanilla-woodsap flavors that aren’t really needed, since the pineapple, pear and peach flavors are delicious by themselves. It would be interesting to try this unoaked.

With grapefruit aromas and flavors veering into the notorious feline scent of bad Sauvignon Blanc, this is not a very attractive wine. It also finishes a little sweet.

An uncomfortable wine. It’s not quite ripe, showing green flavors and a strong dose of that notorious feline smell that diminishes the citrus fruits. On the plus side is extreme dryness and crisp acidity.

Beautiful structure here, with good acids and supple, complex tannins, and a fine overlay of oak. But there’s a lot of unripe or green fruit, offering mint and oregano aromas and flavors, and the finish is lean. —S.H.

Dry and true to Zin’s wild personality, this wine brims with blackberry, mulberry, loganberry and other berry flavors that don’t even have names. It’s peppery, too, but high alcohol gives it a burn.
