Hedges Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Syrah - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the winery’s flagship blend, all estate-grown fruit, and built to age. Intense color, perfume and flavors highlight a focused, concentrated wine. It carries powerful cherry fruit into a compact, extended finish. The wine is so young and compressed that it doesn’t yet show the nuances of terroir and barrel that are built into it; let it breathe for several hours, or give it another five years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The three vineyards are all on Red Mountain, the newest viticultural appellation in Washington state, and headquarters for Hedges Cellars. This is an elegant, stylish Cabernet/Merlot blend, the fruit clean and lean. The tight, youthful structure is beautifully balanced, compact and precise. Time, air, bottle age and food will all help it show its full potential. Editors’ Choice.

Hedges Red Blend - 1998

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For years Hedges produced a popular, inexpensive Cabernet-Merlot; with the addition of Cabernet Franc and Syrah, the wine has evolved into something more complex, though the price still screams “bargain.” Scented with cherries and grapes, underscored with dark, toasty aromas, and wrapped in some pretty tough tannins, it’s a serious effort that could stand a bit of cellaring. A third of the fruit comes from reserve caliber vineyards. Best Buy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A near 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, this perennially popular wine is a perfect match for seafood, pasta, light cheeses and salads. It’s an elegant, stylish wine, with clean, green apple flavors, a strong scent of lime, and a hint of pear. Gorgeous mouthfeel, with creamy, intense fruity, bright acids, and a polished, rich finish. Best Buy.

Hedges White Blend - 2000

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s mostly C (Chardonnay) and S (Sauvignon Blanc) with a splash of Marsanne providing the “M” that complements the well-established CMS Red. Each of the grapes adds something special and the whole seems to be more than the sum of its parts. The Sauv Blanc lifts it, giving it vivid acid and bright herb; the Chardonnay fills in round apple and pear flavors, and the little bit of Marsanne adds peach to the fruit.

The chardonnay, which comprises about a third of the blend, adds a lovely fullness to the palate, and brings in some stone fruit flavors as well. The wine is nicely integrated, tasting neither like a sauv blanc or a chardonnay, but rather a flavorful hybrid, lightly scented with white peach, lavender and pineapple.

Hedges Fumé-Chardonnay - 2003

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is almost two thirds Sauvignon Blanc, one third Chardonnay, and one percent Marsanne providing the ‘M’ that completes the name. Fresh and fruity, pure and quaffable, this fragrant white wine is exactly what this state needs more of. Nothing wimpy about it, just great, lightly ripe flavors of citrus and stone fruits, without the crutch of oak.

Hedges White Blend - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A wonderfully fragrant blend, supple and loaded with berries and darker notes of licorice and coffee. This is sophisticated and European in style—meaning lighter alcohol and less sugar—but in return you get substance and grip. Though it’s built for near-term drinking, there’s nothing lightor insubstantial here; and the mouthfeel is that of a much more expensive wine.

Hedges Red Blend - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Concentrated and slightly earthy, this has more density and grip (as it should) than the C.M.S. red, but a similar profile (51% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Syrah.) Black cherry and plum fruits are wrapped in light smoke and mocha flavors. The fruit-driven coregently leads into soft, silky tannins that leave an impression of black olive at the end of a lingering finish.
