Very close in profile to Blocks 19 and 20, although a tad leaner. Apple and pear flavors are joined with herbs, with rich lees and a balanced overlay of smoky oak. These two Block wines are so similar, only an expert could tell them apart.

Hendry Chardonnay - 2000

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A delicious and balanced wine that suggests the greatness of this vintage. It hits the mouth with firm, dusty tannins, and then the flavors explode. You’ll find blackberries, cherries and currants, intensely sweet and concentrated, and lavish but appropriate new oak. Finishes with an acidic verve that suggests aging. A blend of all five classic Bordeaux varieties.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
After a disappointing 2000, Hendry’s Block 8 returns to form with this ultrarich, super-fruity Cab. It’s massive in black cherry pie flavor, drizzled with crème de cassis and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, and finishes very long and dry. However, the tannins remain sizable at four-plus years. Best now through 2010.

Hendry Cabernet Sauvignon - 2001

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fine complex nose mixes spice, briar, pie cherry, coffee and barnyard. Flavors are pleasant, with plummy fruit, but overall the wine doesn’t have much depth or power. Finishes tannic and a little bitter.

Hendry Zinfandel - 1997

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For California Primitivo this wine advances the argument a mile. It’s rich and ripe in berry, cocoa and coffee flavors, with a fabulously delicious finish. What it has in common with Zinfandel is a briary exuberance, but it’s really closer in quality to a fine Napa Cab.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Bordeaux blend is firm in the mouth, exhibiting rich tannins and a full-bodied dryness. However the flavors are spectacularly upfront, featuring ripe cassis and black currant, milk chocolate, vanilla and a toasted smokiness from oak. Addictively good wine.

Hendry Red Blend - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a lot of funkiness in this wine, which smells like sweaty leather. The flavors are deep and spicy, and the tannins are rich and fine, but that funkiness is a turnoff.

Hendry Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Not many wineries hold Chardonnay for nearly four years, but Hendry did. Unfortunately, the wine is losing fruit fast. It’s dry, acidic and earthy, with mushroom and pineapple flavors. Drink up.

Hendry Chardonnay - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A soft, hot, funky wine. Despite a wealth of berry, chocolate and spice flavors, high alcohol gives it a chile pepper burn.

Hendry Zinfandel - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Hendry, known for Zinfandel, also produces dependable Bordeaux blends, of which this one, which contains all five classic varieties, is a good example. It’s pretty tannic now, but the sweetness in the finish may prove to be a limiting factor. Best now with rich fare.
