Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Disappointing, considering the wine’s pedigree. Sweet black fruit on the nose follows through to the palate, where it’s still sweet, but mighty dilute. Finishes with some oak. What happened?

Focused apple, pear, lime and grass notes are punctuated by some refreshing minerality here. The wine’s elegant in the mouth, with some earthy tones. If only the lovely fruit flavors on the finish hung around just a bit longer. Try with fresh goat cheese, sooner rather than later.

Henschke Sauvignon Blanc - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is mainly Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, with 25% Chardonnay and 9% Pinot Gris to round out the midpalate. Apple and citrus flavors dominate, and there is a certain plumpness to the wine but it retains its essentially citrusy character throughout.

Henschke White Blend - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is one tightly wound Shiraz. There’s cedar and spice on the nose, but the plum fruit is balled up inside, needing time to emerge. Still, the spice notes are impressive, ranging from sage to peppercorn, and the structure is impeccable. Probably worth trying again in 2016.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A harmonious blend of cherries, cedar, chocolate and mint, Henry’s Seven somehow manages to be creamy in texture without carrying any excess weight--it seems almost light on its feet, lingering elegantly on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The blend is 63% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre and 18% Shiraz, with a hint of green to the otherwise dark, plummmy flavors. It’s supple, silky in texture, ending with touches of coffee and cedary spice. Drink now–2015.

Henschke G-S-M - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is primarily (70%) Shiraz, with a blend of Cab Sauvignon, Merlot and Cab Franc, but it comes across more like a Bordeaux blend. Vanilla and cedar notes from oak aging accent cassis fruit—and there’s a hint of mint as well. Medium-bodied, with a long, dusty yet mouthwatering finish. Drink now–2015.

Henschke Red Blend - 2003

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Despite weighing in at 15.5% alcohol, this wine carries it well, coming across as satisfyingly ample; zaftig without being heavy. The mouthfilling flavors of boysenberry and black cherry carry hints of vanilla and spice, with enough length on the finish to confirm the wine’s quality. The blend is 69% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre and 12% Shiraz.

Henschke Rhône-style Red Blend - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Henschke is best known for its red wines, but the 2005 Louis Sémillon shows they know a thing or two about whites as well. It combines some toasty, smoky characters with herbal notes on the nose, then develops flavors of wax, spice and citrus, lingering elegantly on the finish. Tasty now, but might develop even more interesting complexities with additional age.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine boasts aromas of intertwined cherries and herbs that make for a pretty first impression. It’s a light-bodied, delicate style, with flavors of cherries and herbs underscored by dry earth that turn tart and cranberryish on the crisp finish. Drink now.
