While there are some rustic, earthy aromas, the wine’s taste is more elegant. It is blackberry fruits, ripe tannins, a tight acidity that plays with the dark tannins. There is a final mineral, steely edge that needs a year to soften out.

Big, bold brushstrokes characterize this full, generous wine. The color is like ink, the fruit is black, concentrated, the mix of wood and fruit tannins are slashes across the fruit. Altogether, a wine of big gestures that succeed admirably.

Named after the white storks that live in the Alentejo region of Portugal, Reserva Ciconia is an elegant if also powerful wine, showing great minerality and a firm, chewy texture. Black cherry and berry fruits support dusty tannins.

A limited-production wine, fermented in open lagars. It has beautiful perfumes, with touches of violet and sweet spice. With its soft, integrated tannins, this is dense, well proportioned, all in balance.

Named after the sheep that roam the cork groves of the Alentejo, this is a fresh, rich-tasting wine. Its sweet fruit has flavors of dried fruit, black plum juice and a plush, juicy acidity. The tannins are there, but lightly, surrounded by this accessible fruit.

From a winery that only started operations in 2001, one of the new wave in the Alentejo. This Reserva is in a modern, smooth style, big and powerful. But there’s one welcome wrinkle in all this smooth fruit, and that is a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon which gives just the right amount of tannins and interestingly fresh acidity.
