Dense all the way, from the dark, almost black color, to the huge aromas of blackberry jam, smoke and cassis, to the enormously fruity flavors. The texture is massive. This dry, complex wine coats the palate with all sorts of sensations, and the lush, sweet, fruity flavor lasts a full 30 seconds on the finish.

Almost black in color, this big wine begins with impressive aromas of cedar, smoke, and oak, and fruitier notes of black stone fruits and berries. In the mouth, it’s huge and assertive, with gigantically jammy fruit. Bone dry tannins and acids provide structural relief, and the finish lasts forever. Definitely a cellar candidate.

This is an interesting Chardonnay for what it’s not: not a blockbuster in terms of fruit, not overwhelming in oak, not an overly sweet puppy, not cheesy and thick from massive lees contact. Instead, it’s balanced, one might almost say refined. Don’t look for nuances, just enjoy it for what it is.

Blackberry and blueberry aromas are accented by hints of chocolate, cream and mint. Doesn’t quite live up that promise in the mouth, where it turns simple and sweetly fruity.

Dark and young, it impresses for sheer power. In its youth, it’s packed with precocious aromas and flavors of sappy blackberry jam framed in oak, and with a hefty dose of tannins. This young, juicy wine needs time to soften and collect itself, but if the lengthy, elaborate finish is any indication, it will age just fine. Editors’ Choice.

Oak and earth are heavy hitters in this wine—Heritage Road isn’t paved, is it? If you’re looking for fruit, take the road to Barossa. Here, oak suffocates blackberries in the mouth then the flavors drop off. A woody texture persists on the back end.

Round and ripe tropical fruit mark this solid and affordable Chardonnay. Interesting shadings of lime, clove and other spices keep it engaging on the palate. Ends with a medium- length finish of sweet-tart pineapple fruit.

Licorice, berry and mocha cream are major elements in the seductive bouquet. Creamy, concentrated fruit, leather and black pepper on the palate ride the extracted but not too syrupy mouthfeel. This is a rich Aussie Shiraz with dense fruit and lots of oak—but also enough spine to keep its balance.

Blackberry, herb, tobacco and a menthol note mark the nose of this full but not heavy red. The fruit is ripe, sweet and unburdened by excess oak. The long, juicy cherry and licorice finish sports no hard tannins. Lovely for drinking now.
