Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Served at the same time with the Guigal above at Jim and Deb Cianciolo’s summer dinner party; this wine has a much sweeter and deeper nose than the Guigal, aromas of honey, sweet herbs, beeswax, white pepper, ripe and rich; same in the mouth; lots of ripe and rich fruit flavors, exotic herbs, caramel and hints of honeyed fruit; at the same time spicy with good acidity; fresh lemons; smooth and silky at the finish; this wine has more depth and better poise than the Guigal. (18/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet nose, fresh oranges and ripe sweet fruit aromas, sweet herbs and green spices, smoky and earthen; sweet and smooth in the mouth, lots of ripe fruit; spicy and peppery; hot with plenty of acidity making the wine a bit aggressive; a bit steely and hard at the finish, losing some of its sweetness and richness at the end. (16.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This wine is now ripe and ready, very sweet and perfumed nose with rich aromas of flowers and paraffin, smoke, herbs, but mostly flowers; sweet and ripe in the mouth; almost dense; lots of vanilla bean flavors; hints of licorice; good lemony acidity provides focus and freshness, but this is a dense, bordering on heavy wine; unique as all of these wines are though. (17/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This turned out not to be a favorite, the wine seems more advanced and aged than its age suggests; classic nose of honeyed fruit and candle wax, exotic and intense aromas that evoke white flowers, but at the same time spicy and a bit hot; sweet in the front of the mouth with lots of honeyed fruit flavors, spicy and exotic, but the wine has a hard, alcoholic undercurrent that detracts from its otherwise exotic nature; the finish is, as a consequence, too alcoholic and coarse for me, and I have had better wines from this producer. (14.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and intense nose with a strong touch of honey, licorice, green herbs and pepper; smooth and ripe in the mouth, rich flavors; a bit dense as these wines tend to be, but also expressive; good lemony flavors add freshness, and there is a spiciness redolent of ground white pepper; ripe and silky at the end. (17/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Powerful nose of sweet and honeyed fruit, raisins, beeswax, very perfumed and floral, enticing and seductive; sweet and ripe in the mouth; honeyed, floral flavors that show a lot of complexity and sophistication; thick but fresh; long finish with powerful acidity that provides focus and definition; smooth and fresh. (16.5/20) Another bottle at the OxFam dinner was consistent in most respects, but the alcohol was more in evidence.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Much too early to be drinking this wine, the nose is light and faint, and totally closed down, there are emerging aromas of green herbs, paraffin, soapstone, and light lemony fruit; sweet and smooth in the mouth, put this wine on botox; there are no defined lines yet and the face of this wine is smooth and almost expressionless; more time in the glass begins to bring out the sweetness and lemony flavors, good spices, lemon peel; the texture of this wine shows the presence of lots of glycerol with hints of licorice, signaling very good things ahead, but not yet. (16 now but headed higher)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Wonderful rich and ripe nose of sweet cherries mixed with damp earth, leather, black pepper, spices and quite floral and effusive at the finish; sweet and ripe in the mouth, classic for this region; the wine expands in the mouth and would continue to do so indefinitely, but is pulled back abruptly by big drying tannins that swat the fruit in the nose; the wine keeps going though with sour cherry and citric acidity to finish with a clean, spicy finish emblematic of this wine. (18/20) I had the wine again at the Sotheby’s dinner later in the year with consistent notes.

Hermitage Hermitage “La Chapelle” Jaboulet - 1983

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
First whiff is all blackberries and blueberries, but then the nose becomes more elegant and refined with aromas of leather, cherry, hints of lilac; very refined in the mouth, a lighter, more refined style than is found in the likes of Jaboulet or Chave, the wine is nonetheless loaded with expression; balanced fruit, touch of herbs, pepper, very clean and fresh in the mouth, almost “Burgundian” in some sense; long finish that never loses its focus; wonderful wine. (18.5/20)
