Besides the smoky new oak and leesy flavors, there’s not a whole lot of fruit in this wine. At first, you’re tasting apples and peaches, but then the middle falls apart and the finish turns watery. Disappointing.

As good as Herzog’s Special Reserve Cab is, this one is better. It has the same ripely fruity currant and cassis flavors, with fine tannins and a luxurious coating of oak that has been judiciously applied. But it goes the extra mile in finesse and balance, and is simply superb. Right up there with the best, and a considerable success for the vintage.

A savory, delicious Pinot Noir that delivers plenty of flavor. Dry and showing the crisp acidity of this cool coastal region, marked by candied flavors of cherries, raspberries and vanilla, and a rich edge of smoky sandalwood. Kosher.

There’s a dry bitterness and a green unripeness that make this Cab disappointing. Tannic and acidic, with a bare suggestion of cherry fruit.

Too soft for comfort, and too sweet, although the softness may exaggerate the true sugar content. Either way, this simple wine has cloying, candied blackberry and mocha flavors.

Showing some aggressive tannins now, this unusual blend hails from Napa, San Luis Obispo and San Joaquin counties. It’s very dry, with a solid core of red and black currant, carob and bell pepper flavors. Could develop some bottle complexity in a few years.

This bottling has been variable over the years, and the ’04 is not showing it at its best. It’s a good but not a great Cabernet, ripe and a little sweet in cassis and cherry flavors, backed up with firm, dry tannins. Drink now.

There’s too much oak for too little fruit in this wine, with the result that it tastes of sappy, smoky toothpicks. Buried under all that wood are modest apricot and pineapple flavors.

This Bordeaux-inspired blend seems a touch overdone—the fruit has a dried quality to it reminiscent of prunes and dates; the oak is chocolaty and rich. Seems supple enough on the palate, then firm tannins grab on the finish.

Shows the robust mouthfeel and high alcohol that Lodi Zins usually bring, with a concentration of Zinny essence that must be due to low yielding vines. The blackberry and cherry jam fruit is tugged earthward by tobacco, coffee, white pepper and Asian spice flavors, giving the wine a dry, rich grounding.
