Sumptuously intense fruit, fine toasted oak, and lush, smooth tannins all come together in this dramatic wine. It’s a wonder of modern Napa Valley, offering delicious cassis, chocolate and cherry flavors, with enough acidity for balance. Doesn’t seem like an ager, but it sure is good now.

Petty tannic now, which accentuates the dryness, creating an austere palate impression. So it’s one for the cellar, but will it age? Yes. It’s dramatically rich in blackberries, black currants and blueberries, with a voluptuous edge of dark chocolate. Best 2011–2015.

Tasted twice in mid-2007, several months apart. The first time, the wine was tough and astringent. The second tasting showed a fleshy young wine, still with firm tannins, but the cherries and plums were breaking through. This dry young Cab is on a development path. Drink now, with decanting, and through 2012.

Ripe, soft and polished, this is one of those Cabernets that feels fancy and upscale in the mouth. Mainly that comes from the quality of the tannins, which are refined and sweet, and the flavors, which are a combination of blackberry, ripe grapes and new oak. Probably at its best now and for the next five years.

Strikes a good balance between youthfully firm tannins, fairly high alcohol and ripe black cherry, cocoa and cedar flavors. Feels plush and generous in the mouth, and should develop additional bottle complexity through 2011.

Made from 100% Cabernet, this wine is very extracted and jammy, in the modern style of extreme ripeness and fruit-forwardness. Sweet oak, 70% of it new, adds layers of cream, vanilla and buttered toast. Appeals now for its juicy, New World style.

An inaugural release from Chalone Wine Group, and an important one. Possesses the hallmarks of greatness, from the subtle but complex mingling of cassis, cherry, herb, tobacco, mint and dark chocolate flavors to the fabulously ripe, sweet tannins. Big and sturdy yet nuanced, this wine is gorgeous now and should last many years in the cellar.
