This pretty, relatively lightweight Pinot boasts a skinny thread of red cherry fruit wrapped in layers of root beer, dried spices and brown sugar. Finishes with some woody notes of dark coffee and chocolate.

Starts off with superrich, ripe, exotic lemon-and-lime aromas and a luscious, unusual note of white chocolate. It’s bone dry, but it’s so fruity rich, so extracted and hedonistic, it’s as decadent as a dessert wine. Amazingly long finish.

Combines leafy, nettle-y notes with a plump, rounded mouthfeel to yield a wine that’s better than the sum of its parts. Aromas and flavors of green tomato, fig, melon and citrus come together nicely in the glass, finishing fresh and zesty. Drink now.

Always a nice wine, the ’04 succeeds by pushing steely, sharp aromas of nettles, grapefruit and citrus, and then following that up with passion fruit, grapefruit and melon flavors. Basically, it tastes as it smells, and it finishes crystal clean if a tiny bit short. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.

A Riesling for people who think they don’t like this varietal. Starts off with pretty floral notes, and a high-toned hint of acetone or linoleum. Delicate, with peach-apricot flavors and a steely, high-acid disposition. Can age.

This New Zealand winery excels with Sauvignon Blanc and offers some good Pinot Noir, and it’s bubbly isn’t bad at all. It’s robust and toasty on the bouquet, and fairly full-force. The mouth is large and creamy, with typical apple and citrus flavors and also a hint of mustard. The feel across the palate is good, but also a touch aggressive. –M.S.
