Here’s a textbook example of a warm vintage Russian River Pinot. It has the appellation’s velvety richness and varietal typicity, while the heat made for perfect ripening. Brims with cherry jam, blueberry pie, orange marmalade, datenut bread and oaky flavors, all balanced with juicy acidity, and the finish is dry. At its best now–2008.

The name comes from Hop Kiln, an old winery now reinventing itself, and this is a good start. Made partly from Dutton fuit, this Chard is dry and crisply acidic, with polished green apple, lime, kiwi and oak flavors.
