Medium ruby core with brick rim; very slow tears. Marked aromas of brambly raspberry jam, currants, pie cherries, cinnamon stick (Rhone-like), dirt, red licorice, bar soap, carrots. The palate delivers surprisingly high acidity for a Zin (mod +), mod + tannin, high alcohol. Flavors are bright red & jammy fruits, especially cherry and raspberry. There's also some dirt or dust, as on the nose, plus a slightly twiggy green essence. The finish is a little astringent. Overall, I think there's promise here, especially given the structure! The astringency may mellow out and the flavors - admittedly not as deep on the palate as I'd like - may broaden with two or three more years in the bottle. Would love to revisit it in early 2010.
