Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though the label says "late harvest" don't look for unctuous sweetness here; it's a laid-back, off-dry style which still has plenty of acid underpinning a generous core of peach/apricot fruit. Nuances of tea and just the barest hint of honey make it ideal for pairing with fruit-based desserts.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There was significant variation among three different bottles opened. At best this is a tannic, somewhat reductive wine with light fruit that is overwhelmed by new American oak. At worst it tastes mostly of charred wood, bitter smoke, tar and rubber.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As always, this is very young, fresh and jammy. Blatant acids push black-cherry marmalade flavors that are dry and rich. Has some real depth; a rich, creamy wine that makes up in power what it lacks in finesse. Best Buy. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Young and crisp, this intensely spicy wine goes down nice and easy. Citrus, fig and melon flavors are long and rich, showing some complexity. A pleasure to sip on a warm day. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A fine example of why this fresh, fruity variety is gaining new fans. Apple and melon flavors are round and supple, with a creamy texture. Crisp acids make everything perky. Best Buy. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Riesling has long been a mainstay of Hogue — the winery makes some 52,000 cases and says they can't make enough — and it is a fruity, clean, standard-issue Washington style. Crisp and easy to enjoy, it's a "chill it and swill it" surefire summer sip.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Hogue style is "fruit forward" and so it is with this simple, off-dry, quite fruity gewurz. The fruit runs to pear and citrus, and the finishing impression is of a sugary tartness.

A alternative white that even fussy people will like. Richly fruity, with pretty citrus, peach and fig flavors. Fairly dry, but there’s a sugary coating to the finish. Crisp and delicate. Best Buy.

Hogue Pinot Gris - 1998

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An exuberant, muscular, young red wine, with precocious berry fruit aromas and flavors, and soft tannins. It’s on the simple side, and probably isn’t going anywhere in the long run, but it has a youthful quality that’s eminently likeable. Contains 20% Lemberger—that unique Washington grape originally from Austria or Germany.

Hogue Syrah - 1997

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot, a young powerhouse of a wine with tiers of plum, currant and cherry. Notable for its soft tannins, but needs a few years for the flavors to knit together. Great price from a respected Washington producer. Best Buy.
