Starts off with understated aromas of buttered whole-grain toast, pineapple and tropical that gradually build in intensity, finishing with a blast of toasty American oak, vanilla and spice. It's slightly unpolished, but flavorful and full of character.

With its forward fruit and touch of toasty oak, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot is soft and easy to like. There’s a sweetness to the cherry, vanilla and cassis flavors, which are supported by bright acididty. The easy structure yields a juicy mouthfeel.

There’s a nice, jammy, berry and herb nose here with a touch of weediness among the fruit and cedar flavors on the palate. Light-to-medium-weight and smootly textured, it has balance, and berry and cocoa flavors. Singing on the nose, even on the palate, it’s turns astringent on the back end.

This pleasant, medium-weight white from an Iberian grape shows why it has caught on among our adventurous Aussie cousins. The nose of tangerine, hay, and a mild stony note opens to a mouth full of melon, citrus and herb flavors. It sports a tangy citrus finish.

One of Hunter’s best performers in this tasting. Aromas are racy and slight, like steel and pear, with some cinnamon. Medium-weight in the mouth, there’s a nice spine of citrus fluffed up with white peach and very light butter flavors. Well-balanced; it finishes long and a little tart.

It’s hard to find good Merlots in Australia; it’s even harder to find one that’s such a bargain. Offers brambly, tangy oak aromas that carry through to the palate. The feel is dusty, the fruit treading the black-cherry and tangy plum track. Imported by Winesellers Ltd.

Medium-bodied and round, this Verdelho doesn’t give up more than some light fruit-skin flavors on the palate. The nose yields traces of butter and yellow fruit but that, too, isn’t talking much. What’s here is a start, but it wants a little more oomph.

Forward and fruit-driven, with a hint of pepper to the blackberry and plum fruit. Pretty weighty for a Hunter Shiraz, but showing the region’s subtle tannins on the finish. Drink now–2015.
