On the nose, aromas of less than ideal ripeness dominate, including green pepper and humus. The palate shows gripping tannins. Honest and straightforward. Drink up.

Full bodied with a velvety heft on the palate, this Reserve Merlot from Hudson-Chatham offers a striking balance of intensity and elegance. From the nose to the palate, there’s a bounty of rich dark fruit, bramble and smoke layered with silky oak and firm tannins.

An intriguing nose of violet and pepper introduces this New York wine from producer Hudson-Chatham, followed by pretty spice and floral flavors that end on a delicate and dry note. Varietally correct and poised.

Cherry, blueberry, tea…this combination of Cab Franc from the Finger Lakes, Merlot from Long Island, and Baco Noir from the Hudson Valley is aged 24 months in oak and offers ample spice because of it. The black fruit/red berry is balanced by a minerality and a clean finish.

There’s some pleasant notes of plum preserves and spice, but both the nose and palate of this Cab dessert wine are overwhelmed with fruit flavors that are overcooked and overripe with a lingering scent of wet leaves and earth.

This bright, lively red starts with refreshing aromas of cherry and plum, and on the palate, waves of cedar, red berries and pepper. Though not terribly complex, the wine has an appealing, sprightly character and will pair well with poultry and game.

Scents of leather, tobacco and wooded spice lead attractively on the nose, but on the palate, the flavors of savory spice and red berries lead to some friction. The tannins are healthy, the finish long, but the wine wants more balance. Still, it has character and will improve with food.
