Another victim of the cool 2006 vintage, this is unpleasantly loaded with cat pee aromas.

As ripe as the fruit is, and it’s very ripe, with showy blackberry, cassis, plum and mocha flavors, this Syrah is dry and balanced, with the acidity and tannic structure that comes from the terroir of this cool Monterey appellation. It’s a very interesting wine, with real class and style.

Here’s a nice Pinot that shows how ripe that sprawling region can get the grapes while still preserving fresh acidity. The raspberries, cherries, cola and rosehip tea are joined by a rich, fudgy coating of almost sweet milk chocolate. Meanwhile, those acids are just perfect, skimming off babyfat and making the wine balanced.

Nicely dry and silky in texture, with a good balance of cherry, cola, anise, tobacco and pepper flavors gently touched with oak. Made in an approachable style for early drinking.

Showing the acidity this cool-climate region is known for, this Pinot is balanced and elegant. It has polished flavors of cherries, pomegranates, herb tea, orange zest and cola, and after you swallow, a burst of Asian spices covers the palate.

Good and rich, with jammy cherry, blackberry, currant and dark chocolate flavors that finish dry and crisp. But the mouthfeel is a little heavy and Rhône-like for a Pinot Noir, and as a result, the wine is a pace off the ’05.

This low-production Pinot doesn’t leave much to the imagination. It’s all about fruit. Cherries, raspberries, currants, cola, root beer and pepper flood the mouth, housed in a crisply dry, savory mouthfeel. Could develop bottle complexities over the next six years.

A little rustic, with some green tannins that give a chlorophyll and mint taste to the cherry-berry fruit. Drink this Rhône blend now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With sharp acidity and not-quite-ripe flavors stemming from the chilly climate of the Arroyo Seco, this Viognier lacks the lush opulence you expect from the variety. It has the sweet-sour taste of a Chinese fruit sauce.

A bit too soft, sweet and thick to be considered a truly coastal Pinot, but the flavors are very tasty. It’s the essence of raspberry and cherry jam, with sprinkings of cocoa-dusted cappuccino and cassis.
