Take the bubbles out of Cava and this is pretty much what’s left. The nose is light, with peach and banana aromas. Tangy flavors of orange and pineapple are lively but lacking, and the finish is ripe but simple. For flush flavors and just enough zap, this is good.

This structured, medium-weight wine’s nose offers dried apple and nutty aromas. Crisp lime and stony notes come up strongly on the palate. The mouth shows good tension and decent acidity, the flavors are persistent on the solid finish of this tasty white. Drink now–2004. Best Buy. —M.M.

Baked, stewy and very much in the warm Penedès style. The nose is herbal and green, while tobacco, tomato and other reedy flavors just don’t cut it. Mouthfeel and intent are the saving graces; we know this isn’t meant to be a green wine but it tastes that way.

Compact and pungent, and borderline ungenerous at first. Once it opens up, there’s ripe cherry and berry fruit pumped forward by zippy acidity. Toward the back it grows darker and more masculine, and at the very end the tannins get tough.

Light and lucid, with fine pear, almond and cream aromas. The palate splashes apple and nectarine fruit, while the acids and zest on the finish function as the perfect cleanser. Crisp, tasty, and on the dot.

Only a slight note of cheese gets in the way of the otherwise clean nose. In the mouth, lime and lemon flavors are drying, while the finish is simple, like tonic water or something similar. Like many cavas, this one seems to have the goods to work well at cocktail parties and receptions. —M.S.

Yellow in color, with a peachy, baked set of aromas. The palate hits with a blast of acidity but not much else, while the flavors are brash and lean toward green apple and green plum. Rounder and softer on the finish, but also short.
