A drier, more minerally style than many coming out of Marlborough, with white grapefruit flavors that come across as brisk and refreshing. There’s fruit weight on the palate, with the sort of stony flavors that pair with virtually any seafood dish.

A bit disappointing from this producer, but still a good wine, the 2004 Huia Riesling seems a bit muted on the nose and lacking intensity on the palate. On the plus side, there’s some pretty pear fruit and a minerally, chalky finish. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.

Plump and juicy, but missing some of the velvety texture that has marked this wine in the past. Roasted cherries and fresh herbs join dark chocolate, coffee and caramel flavors.

A bit reticent at first, but with time the aromas open up to display rich lychee and floral scents. This is a ripe, mouthfilling example of Gewürz that offers decent competition for entry-level bottlings from Alsace.

Subtly flowery on the nose, with hints of pear and spice, Claire and Mike Allen’s Gewürz is more restrained and controlled than many. Understated poached pears feature only a modicum of spice. Rich, buttery and brioche-like on the nose, this is a relatively full-bodied sparkling wine with tons of personality. It’s toasty and buttery, like a fine pastry, without being excessively heavy, and has a lingering finish.

Concentrated, racy and intense, packed with everchanging notes of fruit that range from peach and melon to passion fruit, pineapple and grapefruit. The long, tangy finish reverberates across the palate long after the wine is gone.

Seems almost too delicate for its own good, with toasted-oat scents gliding over melon, citrus and pineapple aromas and flavors. The orchestra is playing a lovely melody, but you have to listen closely to hear it, so try with understated foods, such as simply prepared white fish dishes.
