Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tight and dry in tannins now, with an astringent mouthfeel that feels like sandpaper. So is it an ager? It’s dry and balanced and rich in blackberries, cherries and currants, so it might be. Try after 2012, if you’re the gambling type.

Rich and ripe, with enormous blackberry, currant, chocolate and cedar flavors, wrapped into firm but smoothly complex tannins. A very good Cab that will develop nuances over the next 4–6 years.

Although this Cab is incredibly ripe and appealing in cassis, cherry, vanilla and almost white chocolate fudge flavors, somehow it manages to maintain balance and elegance. That’s because it’s thoroughly dry, and because of those gorgeously ripe Napa tannins, so fine and elegant.

Hunnicutt Cabernet Sauvignon - 2004

Tastes pretty oaky. The wine is dominated by sweet smoky butterscotch and caramel. But there’s a powerful eruption of blackberry and cassis fruit underneath. Could be going through an unintegrated phase. Try sometime in 2010.

There’s a very good Zinfandel in here, nicely dry and with fine tannins, but it’s drenched with too much oak. Smoky, sweet charred wood, vanilla and buttered toast dominate the cherry and pepper flavors.

Hunnicutt Zinfandel - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very good Zinfandel, rich and complex. Shows the balanced elegance of a fine Napa Cabernet, but the peppery, wild berry, leather, cola and anise flavors are pure Zinfandel. Contains a few splashes of Petite Sirah.

This is a terrific Chardonay, one of the best from Napa Valley, and it happens to be from the cooler Coombsville area. It’s dry and crisp in acidity, which nicely balances the flamboyantly oaked peach, green apple and herb flavors that are beautifully wrapped into a buttery, creamy texture.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rugged in tannins and a little too jammy-sweet in raspberries and cherries, this blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah is basically a pizza wine.

A nice Syrah that shows plenty of richness, and makes you wonder why Syrahs this good are such a hard sell. The wine is dry and the tannins are fine, framing flavors of blackberries, cherries, tobacco, bacon and black pepper. Try as an alternative to a good Cabernet.

A beautiful Chardonnay for drinking now. It’s dry and crisp, with pineapple, peach and pear flavors accented with vanilla oak and creaminess from lees aging. Despite the richness, there’s a firm minerality, a tang of steel that makes the wine bracing. The grapes are from a vineyard in the southerly, cool Coombsville area, an area that needs its own appellation.
