Okay for barbecue, but kind of simple and soft in structure, and sweet. It shows candied flavors of a chocolate-covered blackberry and cherry power bar with nougat and honey-roasted nuts.

The brawniest of Hunt’s releases, it borders on Port-like, with 14.7% alcohol and a burst of plummy, raisiny fruit. Other notes include char, smoke and a caramelized, pie-crust scent. Drinks big, slightly sweet, hot and peppery. —S.H.

Opens with aromas of freshly baked cherry pie crust, tar, licorice and gingersnap, with similar flavors. Feels big and rich in the mouth, with a thick, dense texture. Clearly not a classic Merlot, but interesting in its own right.

Like a good tawny Port, this dessert wine has an attractive aroma of caramelized blackberries, roasted nuts, candied tangerine zest and cola. Turns rich and balanced in the mouth, with brisk acidity that makes the sweetness clean.

Somewhat bitter and ragged in mouthfeel, with a raisinskin sharpness that interferes with the pleasure of the dry, rich blackberries and chocolate. Turns raisiny on the finish, and at its best now.

A robust, softly tannic and powerfully ripe wine showing flavors of cherry pie filling, cola, raisins, red licorice and dusty Asian spices. This dry Bordeaux-style blend contains some Petite Sirah, and is at its best now–2012.

A blend of Cabernet and Syrah, the wine is dry and bitter, with a grapeskin astringency to the currant, blackberry and tangerine flavors. It wisely holds back on the alcohol and excessive fruitiness that can mar Paso Robles reds. But that astringency lowers the score.

Pungently dry, this earthy wine has tobacco and herb flavors that finish with a suggestion of cherries. It’s not a fruity wine, although it is a fairly tannic one.

This baby wears an amazing youthful purple robe. Blueberry and vanilla hit you hard. Beautiful depth of flavor to the generous fruit, but thankfully it stays dry and balanced. Chewy tannins, if a little soft. A fine example of Paso Robles Zin.
