Tobacco, spice, black pepper corn, clove and cured meats create a powerful and inviting wine that would pair well with the heartiest of meat dishes. This excellent expression is very representative of Syrah from sun-drenched Tuscany and it offers a smooth texture and polished tannins with a blast of espresso on the close. Drink after 2012.

This relative newcomer from near Pisa is three-fourths Sangiovese and the remainder Merlot, and the mix is delightful. Black-plum aromas are hardened by the background scents of tar and leather, while soft, smooth tannins allow for a chocolaty, soft mouthfeel that steals the show. Rich, sweet and smooth.

It’s easy to appreciate and ultimately admire the work done here. This is a well-crafted wine with a sharp focus on the intensity and purity of fruit. The sweet tannins are smooth but firm and give the wine enough backbone to pair with succulent steaks or sophisticated lamb dishes. The blend is 70-30 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink after 2012.

Here’s a dark pink, almost red rosé (from oak-aged Syrah grapes) with aromas of wild berry, forest floor and bitter almond. The wine is tart and tangy and ends with a touch of crisp acidity that would pair with ham, cold cuts or thinly sliced roast beef.

Chocolate fudge, vanilla, black cherry, cassis and blueberry essence waft from the surface of this deeply extracted, corpulent ruby-colored wine. Modern and beautifully-executed, you’ll also pick up well-integrated wood tones and refreshing herbal notes. A Merlot component is blended in for softness and smoothness.

A Tuscan blend of oak-aged Trebbiano and Sémillon, Nemorino is a fragrant and full wine with bursting tones of citrus, peach and almond nut. The wine is a perfect companion to white meat or shellfish because it has the natural body and sophistication to match either one.

Here is an oak-driven 80-20 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot with intense notes of cherry, blackberry and ground clove with a touch of dried mint. The wine awards intensity and impressive persistency. In fact, spice and black fruit flavors stick around at the back of the mouth for a very long time.

A persistent ripe cheesy aroma is the only thing that mars this Cabernet-based big brother to Belcore. There’s ample black fruit to the palate and a full blast of espresso on the smooth finish. It’s young now, but already it’s opening up. Maybe the funky aromatics will subside with additional bottle age.
