Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
On the earthy side of Zweigelt, this is a firm wine, showing spice and meatiness. The fruit is fresh and easy, the tannins soft, but there is also a rustic character. Screwcap.

Firm and tannic initially, but followed by bright black berry and red plum skin fruit flavors. The wine is big and burly, the acidity crisp and fresh. Tannins come back on the dry finish.

This Chevalier cuvée needs the extra aging to soften its tannins and give a ripely velvet-textured wine. With its elegant fruit and smooth wood edge, this is a delicious wine now, ready to drink.

The Mittelburgenland is Austria’s red wine land. In the tiny village of Horitschon, the Iby family makes Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and a barrel-aged Pinot Noir. This Zweigelt is all about fruit, driving the wine with soft tannins, cranberries and spice, leaving fresh, ripe acidity to finish. It’s a great barbecue wine, and terrific with Mexican food.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A dry, firmly tannic wine that needs time to develop. Then those delicious herbal, red berry and elegant fruits will break out of the box of dry tannins and wood flavors. The Iby family's cellar in Horitschon in Burgenland, old on the outside, modern inside, is an increasingly fine source of solid red wines.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Classic in Austrian terms means a wine that has no wood aging. So this wine from the red wine heartland of Austria is all about fruit. It is herbal, layered with acidity on top of flavors of redcurrants and cranberries. The tannins offer a firm support to the ripe fruit. Drink now

Medium ruby-garnet core with pale ruby-garnet rim; aromas are rather intense, of blackberry, cola and smoke followed by anise seed and caramel underneath. Little high-pitched and syrupy smelling, but not overwhelmingly so. On the palate it's dry with moderate acid and slightly grippy tannin, but not offputtingly so. Jammy - which I don't love - but also flavors that echo the nose, and overall it's a simple but interesting red. Pepper comes through again on the palate, and the finish is unremarkable.
