Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This excellent wine represents a model for straddling the line between the past and current styles of Brunello. The cherry and raspberry fruit gets a kick from oak-based notes of charcoal and vanilla. Hold for at least four years, if possible.

Loaded with pepper, hard spice and leather, but there’s also plenty of bursting red fruit to this traditional Brunello. With every minute it’s open the wine evolves: At first it’s sweet and forward, but with time it turns earthy and leathery, and ultimately it gets very tight and brooding. Full acids, hammer-like tannins and major-league structure say hold for a minimum of six more years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Well oaked and woodsy, with some earthy nuances as well as scents of campfire and rubber. This is a youngster with aggressive tannins and sharp edges. With a bit of time it’ll soften, leaving a top-flight wine with cherry, citrus rind and a hint of sweet oak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Once again, this is one of the pacesetters for Rosso. The quality and complexity are great, considering the adverse conditions of the ’02 harvest. That aside, the wine shines with red fruit, medium tannins and a graceful finish. Super with food.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Thanks to 36 months of careful oak aging, this hearty Brunello opens with a dark, inky color, deep extraction and intense aromas of black cherry, chocolate, rum cake, cinnamon, mesquite and wet stone. Pair it with hand-made pasta and shaved black truffles.

Riserva Vigna Paganelli is an outstanding wine with bold chocolate and exotic spice aromas that are folded deep within the wine’s solid, succulent structure. This expression earns high marks thanks to the impressively rich and creamy feel it imparts in the mouth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Succulent Sangiovese makes up half the blend and austere Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are the other half, giving the wine a fine balance between power and elegance. You’ll notice cherry, sage, coffee and candle incense over firm tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Enticing and attractive, with no weaknesses. The nose deals all the plum, black cherry and crafty oak that you’d expect, while the palate is snappy and attentive, not fat or creamy. Not flashy but professional; a solid and controlled Brunello. Imported by Paterno Wines International.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This new, well priced wine represents a partnership between the Franceschi family in Montalcino, Tuscany and Terlato in Napa. The rich blend sees Sangiovese paired with Merlot and the wine offers very nice density and purity of fruit, spice and floral aromas.

Il Poggione Red Blend - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc is a fine example of the super Tuscan concept. It’s rich, deep and grapey, a sensationally ripe wine, loaded with tobacco, bacon and cassis. It’s lush, with only modestly full tannins, so it won’t require years in the cellar before it can be drunk. The finish is smooth and delightfully layered, with ample force and clarity. Editors’ Choice. —M.S.
