Full-bodied for a Mosel wine, at 12% alcohol, but tasty, offering rather bland apple or melon flavors but dusted with enough spice and mineral notes to add considerable complexity. Long, spice-driven finish. Imported by Magellan Wine Imports.

Starts with pineapple and apricot scents, then delivers mint and vanilla flavors to go along with citrus custard. Long on the finish, with soft acids, just lacks a bit of raciness. Imported by Magellan Wine Imports.

“Rotschiefer” means “red slate,” a reference to the soils underlying the vineyard parcel from which this wine is made. The wine itself is thick and rich, with pure scents of fresh-picked apples, and flavors of applesauce and minerals. Lacks the bit of zip that would put it over the top, ratings-wise, but still a very attractive wine for casual sipping. Imported by Magellan Wine Imports.

It’s an intriguing idea to blend fruit from the Rhine and the Mosel, theoretically balancing the best qualities of each. Astute tasters will catch a little bit of that in this wine, with darker spice notes playing against brighter floral nuances. The result is a pleasant if rather generic Riesling that finishes with soft pear and melon fruit.

This bursts out of the chute in a blaze of fruit—pineapple, pear, green apple, even a trace of banana. Honestly, it’s a bit disconcerting. But give it some time in the glass and it really changes, going from simply fruity to complex and minerally. Rather full-bodied for a Mosel wine; it does show a touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Starts with beautifully defined aromas of green apple and lime, then adds tangerine flavors to the mix on the palate. It’s not heavy, but it’s not light, either, deftly balancing acid, alcohol and sugar. Long and minerally on the finish.
