A good and interesting red from Salta. The blend is 80% Barbera with 20% Merlot, and the final result is positive. Cherry, plum and earth work the nose, followed by cherry, raspberry and cassis flavors. A thorough, different type of wine for those looking to explore what’s lurking on the fringes of the wine world.

The Torrontes character shows on the nose, meaning there’s detectable lychee and orange blossom scents. The dowside is that the palate is rather thick and honeyed but devoid of flavor. Seems to be fading into the night.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From high-altitude vineyards in the northern Salta region comes this well-made, zippy white blend. On the nose, tarragon combines with citrus, peach and nectarine, while in the mouth, things are solid and even a touch creamy. Finishing flavors of banana, melon and lychee are typical of Torrontés.

Sweet at first, then it turns toward beet juice and bell pepper. The flavor profile is defined by cola, licorice and green pepper, while the spicy finish is marinade-like.

A bit grapy and cloying, but mostly it’s a pure, fruity wine that adds credence to the potential of blending Barbera with Merlot. The ripe palate offers plum and blackberry, while the finish is steady, albeit condensed. Chewy in the mouth, and forward.

Sweet and dark, with a jammy, black-licorice quality. In the mouth, bitter chocolate and pepper seem to mask the weak, low-acid fruit that lies below. Finishes heavy, with strong barrel notes. In many ways, it’s borderline Port-like.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Opens with a full punch bowl of light, flowery, fruity aromas and backs that up with mixed fruit flavors along with touches of mineral, green herbs and fresh lettuce. With 20% Chardonnay stiffening 80% Torrontès, this wine shows a little something different. Imported by Appellation Imports.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A tiny bit heavy and soupy at first, but the palate brings things into perspective as it delivers sweet berry and spice flavors and only modest acids and tannins. It’s a wine for now, with lasting jammy notes that are generally quite pleasant.
