One of Gallo’s dozens of brands, this is a nice wine from five counties north of the Golden Gate. It has pretty aromas and flavors of black currants. It is dry and clean, with easy tannins, and a nice finish. Best Buy. —S.H.

A simple, innocuous Chard with flavors of peaches and pears and a veneer of oak. Feels lightweight on the palate, and finishes short and a bit sweet.

The fruit is leaner and thinner on this than most of Gallo’s current Chards, but in a way, that works in its favor. The wine is more Chablisian, with moderate peach flavors and a crisp, clean minerality.

A classy Gallo offering that comes close to the quality of pricier North Coast bubblies in its dry elegance and crisp finish. At 99% Chardonnay, it’s rough around the edges but has plenty of charm. Best Buy.

Plummy and chocolaty. Chunky and full-bodied, it’s a little rough around the edges, but quite satisfying. Yes, it’s low-acid, but there are enough soft, dusty tannins to keep it from being flabby. Best Buy.

Slightly stewed tart-cherry aromas give hints to the grape’s character. The fruit isn’t very lively, despite some tangy acidity; muted berry, beet and cocoa shadings add interest.

Dust and earth aromas cover underlying apple flavors in this simple, rather sweet wine. Excessively soft acidity makes it drink syrupy. Still, it has basic Chard features and will satisfy most big crowds. —S.H.
