A real oddball that’s musky, melony, sweet and–yes–bubbly. Vidal is a French-American hybrid with some strange petrolly aromatics that take some getting used to, and they’re well-displayed in this example that gets its bubbles from fermentation in sealed tanks, trapping the naturally occurring carbon dioxide.

There’s incredible depth of both flavor and texture in this golden icewine from Inniskillin. Initially, it’s rich and creamy on the tongue with notes of honey, waxy florals and apple. Then, bright flashes of acidity bring forth tones of tangerine and Meyer lemon. Long and languorous on the finish, it’s a gorgeous wine all around.

There’s a classic, elegant nose of apricot, apple and spice on this rich, golden dessert wine, and the flavors of mango, fig and honey have a touch of raciness and spice that balances the components beautifully. A lingering finish and overall exquisite play of flavors ensures that Inniskillin is still one os the best producers of ice wine in the world.

Honey, mango and butter on the nose hint at the opulence that’s ahead, but on the palate, the wine takes a delightful, lively turn. Apple, honey and apricot create complexity, but a balanced acidity lifts the flavors and adds a refreshing edge. Flavors unfold in the mouth, so keep coming back. Imported by Icon Estates.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Perfumey aromas of corn, melon and ginger set the stage for one of the more unique wines on the market. It’s a true dessert-level ice wine, but one with a creamy mouthfeel, thanks to the multitude of tiny bubbles that seem to aid in balancing the sweetness. Strange at first, but tasty. Imported by Vincor USA.

Cab Franc icewines have some reddish color, this one looking a brownish-red. Cran-apple on the nose, the flavors are not traditional for an icewine, with cranberry and apple hinting at bubblegum sweetness. But the structure is, with acidity wrapping the medium-full body.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Inniskillin continues to push the boundaries of icewine, as evidenced by this wood-aged Vidal. The vanilla and spice of oak barrels partially masks some of the stranger Vidal aromas, allowing the apricot and peach scents to come to the fore. There are some creamy lactic notes on the finish that detract slightly, but this is a very good effort at an entirely different genre.

Brilliant stuff that shows not all hybrids deserve to be scoffed at. Flamboyant aromas of dried pineapple combine with fresh apricots and honey in this rich, unctuous wine that’s incredibly sweet yet not cloying, thanks to vibrant acidity. Imported by Vincor USA.

The Vidal Gold Icewine starts with an enticing nose of tropical fruit, honey and spice. Mouthfilling, intense flavors of peach, mango and apricot follow, balanced by crisp acidity. Clean but complex, the wine unfolds extravagantly on the palate. The wine can age and will intensify as time passes.
