Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This new Rhône blend from Robert Mondavi is a blend of 64% Syrah, 19% Grenache and 17% Mourvèdre made at the company’s Byron facility. Shows plenty of smoky Syrah and oak influences on the nose, blackberry and vanilla flavors on the palate, and a moderately long, peppery finish.

This wine coats the glass with glycerinery streaks, and throws off amazingly complex aromas ranging from cherry liqueur through smoky oak to mouthwatering grilled lamb. It’s that rich, too, offering endless tiers of black stone fruit flavors. The structure is provided by good acidity and firm tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Finding the fruit in this tannic, closed wine is like digging down through an archeological tell. Get deep enough, and you’ll hit the cherries and blackberries. But it’s so dry and astringent now that it’s practically undrinkable. Demands cellaring. Try in 2010 but it still might not be ready.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Savory and meaty to some, impossibly brett-ridden to others; this is admittedly gamy—even barnyardy—but if you like funk in your Syrah, bring in dis one. Does have a velvety mouthfeel and some blackberry fruit, so it’s not one-dimensional.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s approachable and drinkable now, with its flamboyant flavors of blackberries and herbs and lush, easy tannins, but is more balanced. Exciting in the mouth; the extremely long, spicy finish suggests aging through at least 2006.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big wine, with plum, blackberry, coffee and dusty spice flavors, with some raisins. The wine is thoroughly dry, and turns sharp on the finish. Mostly Syrah, with Grenache and Mourvèdre and one-third new oak.

Io has a really good track record with this Syrah, which is grown in Paso Robles. The ’06 is intricately structured, a dry wine with complex flavors of blackberries, currants, dates, mocha, leather, grilled meat, pepper and vanilla. Hard to resist drinking it now, but it should evolve in interesting ways over the next six years.

Not as concentrated as the ’99, but an impressive wine. The aroma is especially attractive, with white pepper, cassis and grilled meat accented with smoky oak. Similar flavors, especially blackcurrant, and rich, fine tannins. Notable for the long finish. Mainly Syrah, with Grenache and Mourvèdre.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a producer with a proven track record for Rhône wines comes this powerful, dramatically structured 100% Grenache. Shows the variety’s lush cherry flavors, with complex layers of grilled meat, dark chocolate, black licorice, violets and peppery spice. A bit hard and closed in tannins, it should be given a good decanting.

Heaps of peppery blackberry fruit are wrapped in rich, fine tannins and near-perfect acidity. This is a young wine but it’s so drinkable. Fascinating from the first sip through the long, seductive finish.
