This basically dry wine is soft and simple, with cherry, raspberry and mint jelly flavors. Okay with barbecue.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Strong and assaultive now in massive fruit, spice, oak and minerals, this old vine Zin offers a flood of wild blackberries, mulberries, red currants, licorice, cocoa, violets, black pepper and sandalwood, and the list goes on and on. It’s tannic and dry and very complicated, a Zin that changes by the second. Should last for many years. Now, with rich fare, and through 2019.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A complicated and interesting Zinfandel with lots to recommend it, and at a pretty good price. The wine is dry and tannic, but gentle enough to drink now. It has appealing flavors of blackberry tart, red currants and cola, liberally dusted with black pepper, anise and vanilla, and finished with sweet, smoky sandalwood. Feels lush and elegant and classy through the long, spicy finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very nice Cab that’s praiseworthy for its dryness, balance and elegance. It’s not as rich and dense as some more expensive wines, but offers good berry, cherry and sage flavors, with a scour of tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very smooth in the mouth—perhaps a bit mushy—this Zin has loads of distinctive red fruit (especially raspberry) coated with what tastes like maple or molasses. Caramel-cream and blackberry stand out on the finish and in the bouquet. An easy crowd-pleasing quaffer.

Young and jammy flavors offer a burst of red and black cherry marmalade. This dry wine has some dusty tannins and is pleasurable in a simple way. Drink it with hamburgers, pizza and other comfort foods.

This Loire varietal, also used in blending in Bordeaux, faces challenges on its own in California. Here, it’s simple and dry, with appealing but light berry flavors and dusty tannins. Perfectly honest and forthright, it’s okay as a red table wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A simple dessert wine that’s sweet but not overly so, with ripe apricot, peach and pear flavors and a floral note of honeysuckle. There’s quite a bit of acidity for balance.

Clean and simple, with peach and apple flavors and a solid dose of oak. It has a rich, creamy mouthfeel, and the finish is spicy and ripe. Satisfies the basic requirements for California Chardonnay.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells and tastes of a piece, a lush, smooth wine of considerable appeal. Although it’s a bit soft and melted, the blend, which is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, shows delicious blackberry, black currant, licorice, cedar and spice flavors.
